Hi. I thought it was time to share my somewhat limited but often exciting experiences in the art world over the last dozen years.
1999: At a show in DC, I assembled a “trompe l’oeil” piece from fragments of a photo of Nixon and Elvis. It was 2 feet by 3 feet, and visitors were asked to stand about four feet away in order to visually assemble the photo.
1999: In Arlington, VA, I participated in large show and sale. I sold dozens of original silkscreened posters based on images of giant mainframe computers. I also sold four posters of a retro TV with static to CNN, and they displayed it in their DC headquarters. Inside the static I hid 3D messages like “Kill Your TV.”
2000-2001: While traveling overseas, I created dozens of posters and cards based on images from The 1,001 Arabian Nights stories, and Indian coloring books for kids.
2005: I joined www.flickr.com and posted hundreds of photos taken with a Sony point and shoot camera.
2006: I created www.FlickrClubSA.com, a photography club for San Antonio, Texas. Visit the flickr group to see the pool of photos and the lively discussions. We are nearing 1,000 members! Our group was mentioned a couple of times in the SA Current newspaper. We have had numerous “walkabouts” and meetings where we either go out and shoot the city streets, or have some coffee and discuss cameras and photography.
2007: I rented a gallery in the Blue Star Complex in San Antonio for a week in September, and exhibited photos from about a dozen members of FlickrClubSA.com. Our exhibit was part of a city-wide series of exhibits called “FotoSeptiembre.” Our listing is still online at their website. (I believe all the exhibitors sold at least one item.)
2008: FlickrClubSA.com partnered with the San Antonio Spurs in a photography contest. Cameras with detachable lenses are not normally allowed at any NBA games, but we were allowed to bring in our gear and photograph … the fans, not the game. After the contest concluded, I was allowed to photograph the stars as they warmed up for a game. (One of those photos is a screenshot of my photo on www.NBA.com.)
2009: In the summer, FlickrClubSA.com partnered with the San Antonio Museum of Art in a large contest to photograph the new Museum Reach Section of the Riverwalk. Winning photographers showed their photos in one of the main galleries over three days. Read the press release. More details are still available in their flickr group. View all my Museum Reach photos.
In November 2009, one of my photographs of the Riverwalk was chosen to be published in San Antonio Magazine.
In the fall of 2009, I developed www.FirstFridaySA.com in an effort to get the word out about all the galleries that are open every First Friday night in San Antonio. I’ve been announcing events via Twitter.com/firstfridaysa.
That’s about it for now. More to come!
Well aren’t you a fancy-pants artist? My oh my!!
